Members of Parliament are participating in a workshop focused on the ratification of international legal instruments, highlighting Parliament’s vital role in aligning global commitments with national priorities. Officially opening the session, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Senator Pholile Shakantu, stressed that ratification is “not merely a formality, but the definitive act by which a State consents to be bound by a treaty - bridging global ideals with domestic reality.”
The Hon. Speaker of the House of Assembly, Jabulani Mabuza, also called for continuous and structured capacity building, emphasizing that it should not be limited to periods when instruments are ready for ratification. The workshop aims to strengthen legislators’ ability to effectively engage in the ratification process and ensure alignment with national interests.
