Senators attending a two-day Sensitisation Workshop on Gender Based Violence

Today marked the official opening of a two-day workshop on gender-based violence to sensitise Senators on issues related to gender-based violence that is rising at an alarming rate in the country. Making his welcoming remarks in his capacity as the SADC Parliamentary Forum representative, Senator Isaac Magagula who is also a retired Commissioner of the Eswatini Police Service, stated that he was once a victim of gender-based violence, stating that as legislators, whose mandate includes Legislation, Representation and Oversight, stringent laws must be enacted to deal with the scourge.

EU Ambassador to Eswatini Her Excellency Ms. Dessislava Choumelova making her remarks

European Union Ambassador to Eswatini, Her Excellency Ms. Dessislava Choumelova also stated that gender-based violence, in its different forms, is recognised globally as one of the most widespread and persistent violations of human rights. She added that since she arrived in the Kingdom almost a year ago, she keeps hearing calls to declare GBV as a national emergency. This is due to an alarming increase in the already existing pandemic of violence against women. Present at the workshop were SADC representatives, officials from the Deputy Prime Minister’s office, GBV survivors, Eswatini Police Force, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Justice, Journalists, the church, just to name a few.
