Geneva, Switzerland – Parliamentarians at IPU, 14 October, 2024
Senate president Lindiwe Dlamini says that social media platforms have their pros and cons. For example, they can be a powerful tool for empowerment and information dissemination, however, they can also contribute to the rapid spread of the scourge of misinformation. Dlamini was addressing the 149th Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland where she is accompanied by Honourable: Zanele Mashaba, Prince Mshengu, Sandile Nxumalo and Senator Lindiwe Ngwenya. She was speaking on the theme, 'Harnessing Science, Technology and Innovation for a more Peaceful and Sustainable Future'. She also shared the unique story of Eswatini on experiences and perspectives about technology and innovation, touching on social challenges and enhancing governance. She mentioned the COVID 19 Pandemic and the civil unrest in 2021. These incidents revealed the need for a dual framework that responds to information processing in the era of post-truth and fake news while simultaneously investing in digital literacy to effectively empower citizens.
